Much of BDSM is looked down on by society, but people get especially freaked out by masochism when they are confronted with the basic idea of suffering as pleasurable. The thought of anyone getting sexual gratification from what such entails boggles most minds, leading to the conclusion of "sick" being stamped on both the man who enjoys being on the receiving ends of things, and the female sadist who takes pleasure in inflicting that pain and humiliation.
 
Things don't stop with "sick" though, even when "pervert" is added to it for clarification. Dignified society has many more assumptions and single word descriptions to throw around than just that. The masochist is usually seen as something of an idiot also - the opinion being that he must somehow be mentally deficient to enjoy such things, especially since he seeks to submit himself to them by his own choice (that sickening emotion known as "pity" usually finds its way in here too). He is also perceived as weak and pathetic, especially since he is a man and men are stereotypically not supposed to behave in such a way (funny how the "high-minded" take offense at the man in the lesser role, but have no problem with a woman being second so long as the latter isn't declared). While most people don't want their business known to all, and this includes many masochists, society's rejection of what he finds pleasurable, doesn't exactly contradict the masochist’s enjoyment of shame and suffering. So scold all you want, you're displeasure is his happiness… and besides… those doing the scolding often do it because they themselves aren't happy with their own sex lives and thus don't want anyone to be.
 
The sadist usually gets the worst of things though, in term's of society's scorn, particularly the dominatrix because she is both sadist and female (because that's not what women are "supposed" to be like). But that isn't a bad thing. If a woman wants to claim herself dominant then she should be what she claims, which means facing opposition head on, not submitting to it. If she isn't up to the challenge of doing as she pleases regardless of what the sheep think, then she isn't what she claims to be. Dominance isn't born of ease… it's won through obstacles overcome. Beyond "sick", the sadist gets the additions of "evil", "horrid", "criminal" and a host of similar expressions. She is a monster, a devil, and whatever ~laughs~. Personally, I can only take these things as compliments, and thank you so very much for them. The weak cry their fear when alone, and shout it boldy in words of hollow strength when gathered together with others of like mind - the "false bold" propped up by numbers, and no less weak for it.
 
I love seeing small minds shocked by what I do. I'm not at all embarrassed by my behavior or by the reaction of others to it… but I recognize the fact that they want me to be, and in some way I get off on shoving it back in their faces, demonstrating a level of confidence that crushes any shocked scowls they may throw at me. The end result being quite empowering, at their expense ~laughs~, and that only adds to my enjoyment of what has occurred. Dominant personalities are called such for good reason. If they buckled under the eyes of the sheep-like masses every time one of them went "bah", they would have more in common with that slave herd, than with the self-confident individuality that is one of the marks of a strong person.
