Humiliation is a fundamental part of Masochism - sexual pleasure gotten through a form of abuse (physical, verbal, etc., that in this case is hopefully controlled and responsible in content), particularly the suffering that results from it. In this context, embarrassment and shame is central to that suffering, and while most people would not equate such things with pleasure, the masochist's tastes are quite the opposite, receiving intense stimulation from what the rest of us normally would try to avoid (and for that matter what the masochist also will normally try to avoid, excepting when seeking sexual gratification). So in a general sense, sexual humiliation is a vital part of many different fetishes that fall within BDSM, since this emotion can be achieved through anything from basic insults, to specific verbal abuse as in small penis humiliation, to objectification, to forced feminization, to etc… all the way even to simple submission itself.
If taken as its own fetish (let's say - the relationship between someone who is focused completely on being humiliated and the resulting embarrassment that occurs, and the female who is causing this suffering, who in turn enjoys inflicting it), humiliation is an excellent blending of domination, submission and sadomasochism, with the same general cause and effect equation being played out within it as that which occurs in all other forms BDSM. The target is subjected to the will of the dominant, resulting in submission to whatever events and conditions are to occur. The result is an active demonstration of the dominant/submissive relationship with the end goal being the fulfillment of the respective natures of each person involved. With those who enjoy this particular fetish, the act of sexual humiliation is the central part of the path to that fulfillment. Just as a physical whip will cause intense stimulation for those who enjoy having one used on them, a verbal "whip" will have much the same effect on those for whom embarassment and shame are powerful stimulants.
While outsiders would see such activities as only abuse, and this conclusion is obviously understandable on the surface, those same people usually define all types of alternative sex as abusive or objectionable in some way (particulary what falls under the umbrella of BDSM). Different people get off in different ways, and just because one person doesn't share the view of another, doesn't mean that other's actions are wrong for him. What matters really isn't so much what is going on, as why it is happening and how… along with whether or not those involved are participating in an intelligent and responsible way. Just because something looks distasteful to someone else, doesn't mean those enjoying it are wrong for doing so.
Horror movies shock and disgust many people, but it would be stupid to say that those who love them are all sick in the head just because they like to watch slasher films (those who think so are usually the ones with the real problem - it's called "intolerance" and small minds never like it when it's turned onto them). The same holds for what have become common sexual activities today - oral sex and anal sex, have both had laws passed against them in the past because they were labeled immoral, disgusting, improper, whatever. But now most people would see these acts as fine, so long as consensual and responsible in form. I'm not saying that a day will come when sexual humiliation, or for that matter sadomasochism and all of BDSM in general, will be household activities (if it that happened, it would probably take some of the enjoyed "edge" off of things ~laughs~)… the point simply is that our perceptions are naturally loaded with opinion, based on what we perceive to be going on and what we wish to assume to be the reason why. The reality isn't always the same as what one would think, and just because you don’t "get it" doesn’t mean others don't… it just means it's not for you.
PS - While the bulk of BDSM may never be fully accepted by society, the concept of female domination does seem to be growing in support quite nicely ~grinz~.
